Hi people! Check out this link for a collection of literature lesson plans made for students of all ages. These are ideas contributed by literature teachers who share their experiences teaching various aspects, including poetry, short stories, novels, plays etc. Click on Short Story Unit Plan for instance, to see a lesson plan posted by a senior school teacher for his 10th grade Language Arts class. His detailed lesson plan not only provides suggested activities for the teaching of short stories, but he also provides recommended homework/assignment for evaluation of students’ understanding. I particularly like his idea of using Sherlock Holmes short stories to teach students to make careful observation in a short story. As what he is proposing here is a unit plan rather than a lesson plan, we could perhaps just extract parts of the lesson plan which we find relevant for our own lessons.
If you find that you are having difficulties teaching poetry to a batch of clueless students (a problem I myself have faced), you may want to refer to the lesson plan entitled A One Sheet Guide for Poetry Analysis for a worksheet on approaching in 7 steps. If your problem is with Shakespeare, there is also a post entitled Shakespeare Recitation Assignment that suggests an interesting worksheet for students to work on after doing a recitation of Shakespeare. In addition, you may try clicking on Plan an Essay to take a look at a suggestion on how students can taught to write a literature essay.
However, be warned that there may be one or two broken links. The layout of some of the lesson plans isn’t great either, but I guess there are still some brilliant teaching ideas that we can draw from the lesson plans that are shared by these helpful experienced teachers.
